ULEZ: Fighting for a fair deal

15 Jul 2023

ULEZ was originally a Conservative policy introduced by Boris Johnson as Mayor. The Labour Mayor of London is currently expanding it.

The Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for a delay to the expansion of the ULEZ and a fair compensation scheme for all residents affected. Everyone should be able to breathe clean air, but the way the mayor has rushed through this scheme is reckless and unfair. It’s unfair to workers who have no other way to get to their jobs, it’s unfair to disabled drivers who can’t afford to modify a car and it’s unfair to families and careers who need to visit vulnerable relatives.

Lib Dem MP Munira Wilson, who tabled a motion in Parliament to delay the scheme, said: “The plans are being rushed through without enough thought for how people will cope from a financial or practical perspective”.

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said: “It is time someone stood up for the nurses, teachers, businesses and self-employed people across the commuter belt who have to drive into London frequently. They’ve been left high and dry by both the Government and London’s Mayor.”

We all benefit from cleaner air, but the costs should not fall on Denham residents already struggling with a Conservative cost of living crisis. Local residents are helping London’s economy with Jobs and shopping yet are being penalised with no scrappage support. The mayor should delay his plans and a proper compensation scheme should be available for all affected residents, not just those in London.
