3 Liberal Democrat Buckinghamshire councillors scoop national award for emergency services support during lockdown.
Aylesbury councillors Niknam Hussain, Raj Khan and Waheed Raja where all honoured last night (26 November) at the virtual LGIU Councillor Awards ceremony where they won the 'Collaborative Working' award for their efforts.
Steven Lambert, Lib Dem Leader on Buckinghamshire Council has thanked community groups, business leaders and Councillors for volunteering in huge numbers through the COVID-19 pandemic.
In lockdown, many community groups sprang up to help each other out and provide support and reassurance to those in need. Local Lib Dems provided free printing of leaflets for those groups, giving residents vital information about local support available, and our members helped to deliver these.
Our Councillors and activists also:
- Helped make and distribute PPE,
- Made hundreds of phone calls to check on people in isolation and offer help,
- Supported and volunteered at food banks, and organised volunteers to support those in isolation.
Lib Dem MPs wrote to the government urging them to provide more support to volunteer groups who were helping shielded and self isolating people during lockdown. Volunteers have helped in so many ways including getting food and medicine to people who are shielding.
Steven said: "I want to offer a huge thank you to all of these volunteers. What you have been doing is extraordinary, and is, unfortunately, still needed." He added: "These people are selfless and truly acting to help others, and support should be given to help people where the government has not delivered enough."
Burnham Councillor Carol Linton added, "In these troubled times we have seen the very best of our County, with even more acts of kindness than ever, from people across our many communities."
"The Lib Dems have been proud to support this in every way we can, and we urge all residents to keep following the rules and look out for your neighbours to make sure no one is left without the help and support they need."
